Dr. Marc Babitz: The 2005 Legacy of Excellence Award Recipient
Marc Babitz, M.D., professor and director of the pre-doctoral programs within the Department of Family and Preventive medicine at the University of Utah, is being honored with the Legacy of Excellence Award at the Junior League of Salt Lake City’s 6th Annual Black and White Ball, which will be held on Sept. 17, at the Million Air Hangar. Dr. Babitz was chosen because of his dedication to the annual C.A.R.E. (Community Assistance Resource Event) Fair and for his work in providing access to medical care for all within the community.

Dr. Babitz is the senior associate director for Utah’s Area Health Education Centers Program and an advocate for the working poor and the homeless who need quality medical care, but who often do not have access to it because they cannot afford medical insurance or live in remote or rural areas.  Since May 2005, Dr. Babitz has served as the director for the Division of Health Systems Improvement for the Utah Department of Health.

C.A.R.E. Fair is Utah’s largest free medical and health clinic serving families from Utah, Salt Lake and Davis counties. Individuals and families receive private medical tests and screenings at no cost.   Presented by the Junior League of Salt Lake City, C.A.R.E. Fair, now in its 13th year, offers the services of more than 300 local medical volunteers and more than 50 community agencies. “Because of Dr. Babitz’s efforts, 3,400 people were served at C.A.R.E. Fair in 2004. We project the same number of participants will be served this year,” said Pearl Wright, current president of the Junior League of Salt Lake City.

The Legacy of Excellence Award recognizes and celebrates the efforts of an individual or organization in the community that exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism, whether it be through individual contributions or by a willingness to serve.  The honor is given to a citizen who manifests energy, passion and a commitment to building a better community.

Tickets for the Legacy of Excellence Award are $100 and can be purchased by either calling the Junior League of Salt Lake City at 801-328-1019 or online at www.jlslc.org.
