Junior
League CARE Fair to Offer Free Medical & Social Services, August 3 & 4

Lake City. Dr. David
N. Sundwall, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health, will speak to
community leaders, and Junior League CARE Fair supporters and donors at the
Junior League CARE Fair Luncheon, to be held August 3, 2007 on the importance
of health services for the under- and un-insured in Utah.
The luncheon is being offered to provide community leaders, CARE Fair
supporters and the local media the opportunity to understand and see firsthand
the impact of the Junior League CARE Fair in providing free health services to
local families and individuals in need of basic medical services.
The luncheon is scheduled to
begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3 at the Horizonte Instructional &
Training Center
located at 1234 South Main Street,
Salt Lake City. Dr. Sundwall will address attendees at
approximately 12:10 p.m., with a ½ tour of the Junior League CARE Fair (which
will be in progress) to begin at 12:30 p.m.
The tour will be open to all in attendance, including media.
Dr.
Sundwall, was appointed by Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. to serve as Executive
Director of the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) in January 2005. In this
capacity, he supervises a workforce of almost 1,400 employees, and a budget of
almost $1.8 billion. Dr. Sundwall
previously served as President of the American Clinical Laboratory Association
(ACLA) until May 2003, when he was appointed Senior Medical and Scientific
Officer. Dr. Sundwall has extensive
experience in federal government and national health policy, including serving
as Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA),
Public Health Service, U.S. Department of Health and HHHuman Services (HHS), and as Assistant Surgeon
General in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service
(1986-1988). He also served as Director of the Health and Human Resources Staff
(Majority) of the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee (1981-1986). Dr. Sundwall graduated from the University of
Utah School of Medicine, and completed a 4-year residency program in Harvard University's Family Medicine Program.
Now in its 15th year,
and the largest health fair of its kind in Utah, the Junior League CARE Fair helps
low-income, underinsured and noninsured families in obtain free medical
services and community agency information by providing free services in one
central location. This year’s Junior
League CARE Fair will offer more than 15 medical services from over 300 local
medical volunteers, as well as information from representatives of more than 50
community agencies, and is expected to serve over 3,300 people during the 2-day
event.
Serving the Salt Lake
community since 1931, the Junior League of Salt Lake City, Inc. is an
organization of more than 600 women committed to promoting voluntarism,
developing the potential of women and improving communities through the
effective action, education and leadership of trained volunteers. The
Junior League donates 20,000 to 25,000 volunteer hours and approximately $250,000
annually to address critical issues in the community.
The Junior League CARE Fair will
be open to assist clients from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 3, and 10
a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, August 4. For
