Refugee Integration into Society through Education
R.I.S.E. RISE is the newest project of the Junior League of Salt Lake City. In collaboration with Catholic Community Services, we will be assisting refugee women as they adjust to life in the United States.
The objective of this project is to create a six-week course during which we will teach
refugee women. The curriculum will focus
on three areas that are very
interrelated and necessary as people from other cultures enter our
society. The three areas of focus are:
- health/wellness
- hygiene/cleanliness
- budget/finance.
We do not want to turn the refugees into ‘Americans’; rather, we
want to celebrate the diversity they bring to our community. But, to live successfully in this
country, mentors at Catholic Community Services have discovered that refugees need to learn certain everyday skills that
they have not needed before. The RISE
committee of the JLSLC wants to create a course that will teach the women, and thus their
families, the basic knowledge and necessary skills to understand our ways and
become self-sustaining members of our society.
The curriculum is still being created and we expect to have our
first test course ready in early spring of 2008. |
