A Legacy of Excellence

The Junior League of Salt Lake City's Legacy of Excellence award was renamed last year in honor of its first recipient in 2001, Cleone P. Eccles. Each year, the Junior League  presents the award to recognize and offer our heartfelt thanks to an individual or organization in our community that exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism through their individual acts, an open heart, and willingness to serve. It is given to a citizen or entity manifesting energy, passion, and a commitment to building a better community. They are mentors for us all to emulate in our personal and professional lives.

This year, we were pleased to present the Cleone P. Eccles Legacy of Excellence award to People Helping People, an organization with whom the Junior League of Salt Lake City has had a long relationship.  The mission of People Helping People is similar to the goals of our Women Helping Women program by strengthening families through successful employment with a sustainable wage.  People Helping People is dedicated to reducing the number of children living in poverty by teaching low-income women, primarily single mothers, how to earn an adequate income through stable employment that pays a living wage.JLSLC 2013-14 President Kristin Kraus presented the award to People Helping People Executive Director, Kayleen Simmons, at the Masquerade Ball on April 12, 2014.

Junior League Hotsheet

Junior League Member Spotlight

Inside The League:

Renee Leta has been a member of the Salt Lake Jr. League for over four years. During this time, she has served on the CRPD committee and on the board as Community VP.  Renee was part of the team that reviewed the past three year collaborative projects to determine the best “next-step” for the league. During this time, it was decided that the Salt Lake Jr. League was doing such a great job addressing the most urgent needs in our community and continued focus would be placed on the League’s signature projects.

It was a nice indication that the League had its pulse on the community and its needs.”

Renee is currently on the Nominating and Placement Committee serving as an advocate. In this role, she has gone above and beyond expectations in order to truly get to know the members for whom she advocates.  She is the kind of person who does more listening than talking which is exactly the type of person one would want as an advocate and fellow Jr. League member.

Outside The League:

Renee is a Salt Lake City native and, although she has moved away a couple of times, she always finds her way back to the state. She lives in the hip 9th and 9th neighborhood with her husband and dog Annie. For fun, you can find Renee outside skiing, fly fishing, mountain biking or gardening. This could be why, when asked what she could not live without, Renee replied

Cheap sunglasses - I misplace too many each year to afford to lose quality sunglasses.”

Renee holds a degree from the University of Pennsylvania Annenberg School for Communications and from the LBJ School of Public Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. She now works as an account supervisor for a digital and direct marketing company.

Community Impact:

Renee recently volunteered at the Women Helping Women clothing.
